Butter & Gun$
By m4k3 | May 9, 2008

In honor of Loyalty, one of the better-known songs off the Blue Scholars’ latest LP, Bayani, they have released a new digital-only EP, entitled Butter & Gun$. Definitely on the mellow/poignant side for hip-hop, but you gotta love the heart. There are three tracks on the EP and then three corresponding instrumental versions of the same songs. If you’ve already got Loyalty, then you’re pretty much up to speed with the addition of these two:

Disingenuous (Ellen)
By m4k3 | May 8, 2008

Busdriver has bestowed us with a new track, which is every bit as rapid-firing as anything he’s done. It’s a pretty good song for a guy like me because I don’t listen to lyrics too carefully on the first few passes through a song. A good practice to implement here, as your head is likely to explode if you try to decipher it all at once. Might not come across as a catchy song at first, but give it a few listens; it’ll hook ya in the eyelid!

A (Fleeting) Capella

Maybe it is my love of a capella, or maybe it is my love of beards. Either way, Fleet Foxes is (are) good.

F’aaart
By andrew | May 8, 2008
You know, fan videos (aka “unofficial” videos) are normally just a terrible pile of garbage that I wouldn’t ask my garbage man to watch even if he had a few minutes left over from his busy day picking up garbage. These terrible pieces generally sadden me at their lack of live rocking band footage. Hardly seems worth my time if I don’t get to see Zach Condon jumping forward at the camera and licking the lens. However, on occasion a rare slice of f’aart (fan animated art) catches my eye and doesn’t make my eyeballs weep for the time I spent watching. Recently I had the privalege of having two such occasions.

Ticket Giveaway - 5/8/08 The Teenagers
By andrew | May 6, 2008

I won’t pretend that I know much about XL recording artists, The Teenagers. But we will support them in their holy quest to provide music to the masses of Boston. Thanks to the generous Parisian threesome, Morkleson has two guest list spots to give away to their upcoming show at the Paradise Rock Club on Thursday, May 8th. They will be opening for Team Robespierre and a good time is guaranteed by all.
If you (and your +1) are in the Boston area and interested in partaking in a show this Thursday, simply email: morkleson[at]gmail.com and put Teenagers in the subject line. Requests must be in by 8:00am on Thursday and the winners will be emailed by 12:00pm.
For a little background, check out The Teenagers’ MySpace, the snazzy bio (below), and the giddy video for their track Holiday.
“Consisting of three lovely French 20-somethings, lead singer Quentin Delafon, guitarist / synth man Dorian Dumont and bassist Michael Szpiner, The Teenagers are a band that could have only come from Paris. Their sound is built around a backbone of golden pop melodies, with a penchant for leftfield visioning - all enveloped in a sardonic wit and lingering Sofia Coppola soft focus. “While the trio left their teenage years a few years ago, adolescence is a concept that cuts to the core of the group. They’re in love with the idea of the dreamy teen, inspired by sunset walks through the park, clogging up shopping malls for no good reason, holding hands, and stolen kisses in the cinema. Similar to naughty filthy mouthed teenagers – their debut single ‘Homecoming’ is full of foul innuendoes and lyrics that would make Serge Gainsbourg blush. With its nonchalant and biting humour, ‘Homecoming’ is a 21st Century ‘Summer Loving’ set to a sleazy lo fi French pop backround ; a wash with guitar hooks and soaring electro synth riffs.” “Reality Check”, The Teenagers’ first full length album comes out on XL in the beginning of 2008.”
Special thanks to The Teenagers & Claire at Beggars Group.

NXNW
By andrew | May 6, 2008

The Northwest has a long and illustrious line of famous hip-hop artists: Sir Mix-A-Lot, Kid Sensation, and…um…well… surely the list goes on and on. With that in mind, I wasn’t particularly surprised when I first heard Blue Scholars was from the great state of Washington. Truly remarkable rhymes that when paired with a catchy beat, can’t be…beat? Seriously though, the North By Northwest JakeOne Remix highlights all that is good in rap music. I challenge you to put it on and not feel an overwhelming urge to rep the 206. “We need KUBE like we need to build another stadium”
